Blues great Buddy Guy and ex-Ozzy Osbourne guitarist Zakk Wylde are among the many respected musicians who will participate in an upcoming eighth edition of the Experience Hendrix Tour. The 2014 installment of the tribute trek, which features a variety of stars performing the music of the late Jimi Hendrix, gets under way on March 11 in Grand Prairie, Texas, and currently is mapped out through an April 3 concert in Detroit.
Serving as the rhythm section for the entire tour will be bassist Billy Cox — who played in both the Jimi Hendrix Experience and Hendrix's Band of Gypsys — and drummer Chris Layton of the late Stevie Ray Vaughan's backing group Double Trouble. Among the other musicians who will perform during the outing are Los Lobos' David Hidalgo and Cesar Rosas, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, funk bassist extraordinaire Bootsy Collins, Jonny Lang, Dweezil Zappa, Doyle Bramhall II and Eric Johnson.
A variety of as-yet-unannounced special guests also will be hitting the stage during the outing. In addition, the winner of the recently launched "Jimi Hendrix Guitar Competition," who will be chosen in February, will get to perform at one of the tour stops.
Hendrix's stepsister, Janie, president and CEO of the Experience Hendrix company, says in statement, "It's our continuing mission to do all we can to celebrate what [Jimi has] given us and to keep his music in the forefront: The Experience Hendrix tour does that with brilliant musicians who love Jimi, electrifying the stage with his music and sound."
